“The Pharisees said to him, ‘Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?’” — Mark 2:24
(Please read the scripture passage before moving on to the devotional: Mark 2:18-28)
In this text, people ask Jesus two questions: “Why do your disciples not fast?” and “Why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” Both of these were questions intended to condemn Jesus’ disciples. The first question was because they did not follow the customary actions of those who were called “disciples” at that time. To this first question, Jesus answered with the parable of “new wine and new wineskins.”
The second question thrown by the Pharisees—asking why His disciples do not observe the Sabbath—makes us look a little deeper. It is clear that from the Pharisees’ perspective, the disciples failed to fully keep the Sabbath by performing certain “actions” on that day. Jesus points to a specific event recorded in the Scriptures and tells them that they are misunderstanding the Sabbath.
Legalism toward the Bible is an attitude that regards the Scriptures as legal code and condemns those who fail to keep them as lawbreakers. Regarding such an attitude, Jesus invites us to look back at the true spirit and meaning of the Scriptures. With that heart, Jesus speaks of compassion instead of condemnation for those who cannot live according to the Word. Because a physician is useful to the sick, and the Son of Man came for the sinner.
Prayer
Please remember that during this Lenten season, we are praying together not only for our own sins but also for the sins that fill the world. Let us lift up our neighbors, this society, the nation, and the whole world before the Lord.
As we pray, let us continue our commitment “to reform the nation, particularly the Church; and to spread scriptural holiness over the land.”
