Lenten Devotion #3: Holy Solitude

February 20, 2026

“In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.” — Mark 1:35

(Reading: Mark 1:35-45)

Korean churches hold a unique and cherished tradition known as “Dawn Prayer” (Saebyeok Gido), typically held at 5:00 or 6:00 every morning. While many point to Jesus’ early morning prayer in today’s text as the origin, this practice also has deep cultural roots. Long before Christianity reached Korea, there was a tradition of waking at dawn to offer a bowl of fresh, clean water while praying for the family’s peace and children’s blessings. When the Gospel arrived, this discipline of the early hour merged with Christian faith to become the prayer meetings we know today.

Have you tried praying at dawn? While a quick “Good morning, Lord” as you wake is wonderful, there is a specific power in starting the day a little earlier to focus entirely on Him. This is the pattern Jesus sets for us.

Interestingly, today’s passage begins (v. 35) and ends (v. 45) with Jesus seeking out “deserted places” away from the crowds. This repetition highlights a vital rhythm: we need “Divine Isolation” before God just as much as we need connection with people. Standing alone before God allows us to face our deepest selves, giving us the spiritual health necessary to then re-enter the world and serve others.

During this Lenten season, I invite you to practice this “Holy Solitude.” Find a quiet space, even for a moment, to walk in step with the Lord.

Prayer & Intercession

We lift up Judy Kibler, who has been in rehab for about three months following her hospital stay. She has expressed a deep desire to reconnect with the church community. Let us support her with our prayers and perhaps a word of encouragement.
